When it comes to repotting a plant, the best time to do this is in the spring season. When you first purchase a plant and bring it home do not repot plant immediately, they need a few days to adjust to a new environment.
Check and see if the roots are pot bound by gently pulling the pot off without interrupting the root ball. When it’s time to repot, you’ll need a bag of potting mix, a bag of soiless soil/ or seed starter soil and perlite. Mix half of soiless soil or you can use sand instead and 2 parts of perlite. Sand or soiless soil provides good drainage and perlite keeps soil from being to compact. It is also good to use Charcoal pieces it helps with drainage. You have to water the soil a little bit otherwise later you’ll see the soil drying out. Soil must be watered (not soaked) before using or it will always be dry. Sizes of pots is important too, always go up one size never 2 or more to large of a pot can kill any plant except for Miniature Roses they require a pot 3 times the size of their root ball and always use pots with a drain hole at the bottom. Terra Cotta pots are the best to use because it allows the soil to dry. The best thing really to use for potting mix is soiless or seed starter soil and perlite, then get charcoal chips and place it at the bottom of the pot for better drainage.
Repotting Orchids- only use Bark chips never repot orchids with soil. There is only one variety of orchids that can be potted into soil and that is Jewel Orchids. When you do repot a jewel Orchid use Mostly Seed starter Soil, and 2 parts of potting mix, and 1 part perlite.
Choosing a pot:
Pot size is important for maintaining healthy plants, pots should be no more than an inch larger than the root ball. And if you chose to use a deep pot, place stones or broken clay pieces at the bottom. Too much soil will produce root rot, or too deep will become to dry. Clay pots are great for most indoor plants that likes to be more on the dry side. Use plastic pots for plants that needs to be more on the moist side.

I find this site to be very useful even though I live in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia 3043. All i do is change the times of the year as our winters are June, July and August, Spring is September, October and November, Summer is December, January and February and Autumn is of course March, April and May.
